Position Purpose Summary

The Director – HR and Labor Relations, will play a vital and strategic role at BlueLinx. This role will lead HR programs and activities across the field (e.g., labor relations, associate experience, staffing, talent management and HR operations). This role will partner with HR and various business partners across the business to ensure programs and activities are aligned with BlueLinx’ overall talent strategy. Lastly, this position will manage labor relations and lead a team of HR Business Partner(s) and HR Generalists. 


  • Drive the Business Strategy - Understands the company’s vision, mission and strategy. Understands industry trends and business unit objectives and then sets performance goals and objectives accordingly. Provides leaders from across the organization with effective, contemporary, practical advice, support and programs.
  • Labor Relations - Develops, recommends, negotiates, and implements labor relations strategies, processes and policy changes. Provides strategic and tactical leadership to management and associates on matters related to labor relations to maintain effective labor relations. Ensures equitable and consistent interpretation and application of collective bargaining agreements. Conducts collective bargaining, including contract negotiations, proposal preparation, and drafting of labor agreements. Administers arbitration processes and resolves grievances. Assists with union campaigns and arbitration.
  • Associate Experience - Maximizes the hearts, minds, and hands of our associates in order to continuously improve the overall associate experience. Ensures an effective two-way communications system is in place throughout the business. Ensures a positive and safe work environment through coaching and developing strong people management skills in BlueLinx leaders. Manages formal and informal associate concerns. Collects, analyzes, reports and presents employment-related data, such as turnover, retention rates and exit interview results in order to make recommendations to management for action planning.
  • Staffing – Oversee the strategy and processes for identifying and recruiting the right talent, at the right time, in the right place, for the field organization, including the utilization of full-time, part-time, temporary associates as well as contractors.
  • Talent Management – Oversee end-to-end field HR programs focused on organizational design, assimilation, succession planning, leadership identification, leadership development and performance assessment.
  • HR Operations - Oversees processing of all back-office HR activities, including onboarding, off-boarding, changes, background checks, orientation and compliance.   
  • Leads HR Team - Leads team of HR leaders and professionals. Ensures direct reports obtain coaching, training, and development opportunities to enhance performance and contributions to the company. 


  • BA / BS required.  Masters a plus
  • PHR, SPHR a plus
  • 8+ years of experience in one or more related areas of responsibility, including labor relations, associate relations, associate engagement, HR operations, staffing and talent management
  • Experience in a multi-site, geographically dispersed organization
  • Significant planning, communications and interpersonal skills to ensure coordinated efforts across the group or business units
  • Business operations knowledge and acumen
  • Broad knowledge of employment laws and regulations
  • Experience and active participation in labor negotiations. 
  • Experience managing and negotiating collective bargaining agreements, handling arbitrations and oversight of union organizing campaigns
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite Software and relevant tools/technology
